Information for Schools and Teachers

Have a look at our newly designed page for schools and teachers. We have put together information and lots of useful links for you.

Pupils and Queen Elizabeth II.Stereotypes wither when human contacts flourish, and we should continue to encourage our young people to know more about each others' countries. I am pleased that our two governments are actively looking at new ways to promote these contacts and I hope to see something of this whilst I am here.

(Queen Elizabeth II. said this in a speech given during her state visit in the Berliner Zeughaus)

UK-German Connection

In November 2004, during her state visit to Germany, HM The Queen and German President Horst Köhler noted the vital need to involve especially our younger generation in building future understanding between our two countries and called upon our two governments and societies to do more to encourage contact and friendship between young Germans and Britons.

UK-German Connection is the direct fruit of this initiative.

With its "umbrella" role, it provides easy access to and a co-ordinating service for all UK-German opportunities for the school, youth and training sectors.

Bringing young people from both sides of the Channel closer together has an immensely positive and lasting impact on UK-German relations. Says Ute Paetzig, Director of UK-German Connection: “Stereotypes are quickly dismantled and young people easily make friends.“ Or as young Anthony from Sheffield put it during his trip to Leipzig: “The Germans – they’re just like us!“

A Prime Example: Berlin-Belfast Partnership

peace wallThe aim of the Berlin-Belfast partnership (supported by UK-German Connection- see above) is to build long lasting sustainable links between schools, youth groups, education authority staff and youth workers of both cities, so as to contribute to the development of skilled, knowledgeable and responsible citizens. We hope to see joint projects undertaken by the young people and study visits by those who work with young people. I hope the partnership will also go beyond education and lead to links between other spheres of society - in the political, commercial, business and social sectors of each city as they explore ways to support this partnership.
