Press statement by British Ambassador Sir Michael Arthur (20/04/2009)
I am delighted that their Royal Highnesses have agreed to visit Germany this year. The timing is perfect.
Their visit will highlight the British government’s work with our German partners in the key areas of climate change, sustainable growth and integration. These issues have been the subject of HRH The Prince of Wales’ own personal interest and engagement over many years. They also go to the heart of the modern relationship between Britain and Germany at the start of the 21st Century.
As British Ambassador to Germany my top priority is to make sure that we have the best possible partnership with our German hosts.
Germany is not only our neighbour, but also a close political ally in the EU, G8, G20 and NATO.
The UK regards Germany as an indispensable partner in tackling challenges such as the global economic crisis, climate change, energy security, counter-terrorism, counter-proliferation and migration.
A visit by Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at this time will give a much welcome boost to the UK/German bilateral relationship. One cannot overstate the value and significance such a long-standing friendship, particularly during a period of huge economic uncertainty.
